Smoothies

One of the least eaten but most important parts of our diet are salad greens.  A great and easy way to add greens to your diet is with a summer smoothie.

I have come across dozens of recipes for smoothies and here are a few!  The best ones are fruit mixed with about 40% greens.  This allows the fruit to clear the bitterness of the greens.

Some of the benefits (side effects) of green smoothies are

  • Weight loss
  • More energy
  • Better skin
  • improved sleep
  • Better digestion

So if you are not eating 3-4 serves of salad greens every day, get the blender/food processor out of the cupboard and start making smoothies. 😀

A simple smoothie:

  •  2 large pears (seeded)
  • 1 large handful of baby spinach.

Upping the ante:

  • 2 cups green grapes (Frozen, this will chill the drink)
  • 1 (130 g) orange, peeled
  • 1 Pear (I prefer packham pears for juicing)
  • 1 medium banana
  • 1 cup kale
  • 1/2 cup water

Healthy breakfast smoothie:

  • 2 bananas
  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or other)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla (essence
  • )1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • Add all ingredients into a blender. Blend until mixed. Serve in tall glasses and enjoy.

You can freeze the bananas first to make this a cool summer breakfast.

Over the years many people have become converts to the power of the smoothie.  It is a great way to add this important food group to your diet and enjoy salads without all of the dressings and oils that often go with salad greens.  It is important to remember the benefits of dark green leafy vegetables.  This drinks will boost your energy levels and your metabolism.  As your metabolism increases you will find yourself shedding weight without dieting.  This is because your body will increase the amount of energy you burn everyday without the need for exercise.
